Top Daily Use Dumpfinds 2024

…and since we are more than halfway through 2025, I will include the things that have been useful this year as well.

I can’t quit thinking about all the fucking spam I just sorted through before getting down to writing this documentation of the shit I collect. So much shit, so much useless information crowding out the useful stuff on the internet. That’s the metaphor here. Humans creating big piles of useless shit now have the assistance of machine “learning” to generate piles upon piles of more useless regurgitated shit.

It could be said that I am contributing to this pile of crap with my documentation of collecting stuff. Yes. But at least it is human shit that you are stepping in.

Um…

We produce a lot of stuff. So, why is it still valuable when viewed through the law of supply and demand? We have an over supply of goods in North America yet we have people with nothing.

“Thanks Captain Obvious.”

Well, the solution is simple. Support those in your community. If you have to buy something support small business.

I prefer to get my shit for free.

Just a rant. Will write something less rant-y.

1. Clothes, boots n shoes

I’ve been finding a crazy amount of good stuff to wear – Practical workwear, practical workout wear, comfortable crap. Highlights of these day to day items include Muck boots, workboots, Croc sandals (can be worn with socks!), high quality hiking boots, synthetic workout sweat gear, even skate shoes that are at the sweet spot of being 5-10 years out of fashion. 15-20 years out of fashion is the start of retro.

2. Computers, workstations, and media centres

Servers from trash! Originally it was just experimenting with extra computers that I rescued from e-waste. Now they host some useful things. Various media live on one. It is my main storage for a music collection. A bunch of services are in Docker containers. Wger for gym fitness tracking. Tube Archivist for archiving useful video how tos and entertainment for the days when the internet goes down. AutomaticRippingMachine to rip discs of all sorts. The other server runs Proxmox to mess around with virtual machines.

One of the little computers is used to blast music to motivate workouts. The screen in the corner articulates to show Wger workout stats, or act as a video jukebox. The sounds come through a vintage Sansui amp and big “party” speakers with horns and an 18″ woofer.

I’m still using Dumpfinds desktop WOPRII and Thinkpad t460 as daily computers.
