A few years back I was researching decent budget headphones and eventually decided on the Audio Technica ATH-M50x. I previously had to contact Audio Technica to get help with a turntable platter and the customer service was amazing. I ended up speaking with a rep for a region in Canada and he went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure everything was right – and he did this from the very start of our first conversation. I am loyal to them now.

So I bought the ATH-M50X for around $200. Today I found a discarded pair of the previous model ATH-M50 in a snowbank at the dump. At first, I thought that they couldn’t be genuine and were knock-offs because of non-detachable cable. Apparently, the model M50 doesn’t have the detachable cable of the M50x model and these are the real deal.
The headphones work and sound great. Cables intact but the earpads are pretty worn. The earpads are so easy and cheap to replace that I am still wondering how the fuck anyone threw these out.
