Among the things I never buy and will possibly never buy in the future, are lamps. They are everywhere at the dumps I frequent and found everywhere e-waste is discarded. Why lamps? Why would you throw away something so useful at such a high rate? Why would you throw away the cute symbol and representative of a major animation studio?
How do we solve the problem of humans being lazy wasteful creatures? That’s basically what it comes do to. The lamp don’t light. Must get light from new lamp.
How do we solve the problem of companies making shitty lamps that break and are a pain in the ass to fix?
Stop buying lamps.
“But I need light”, you say.

Try living without the lamp to learn what the value of a lamp is. Some will find they don’t need one and others will find they need a lamp very much. This will adjust the value of a lamp in a person’s mind. For those who desperately need a lamp maybe learning to fix lamps is a valuable talent. Perhaps if lamps are valuable to you, buy a lamp that is made from quality materials – buy that lamp from a quality company or buy a lamp from your neighbour.
Or get your lamp for free because other humans are still throwing out working or easily fixed lamps.
Other stuff I get for free and may never buy again are:
Surprisingly
- Jeans, workwear, bags, electric piano keyboards, small Fender amps, most types of cables that you look for when you can’t charge something, connect to something, or listen to something.
Not Surprisingly
- Furniture, glasswear, headphones, Apple products – There are stacks of 5 year old Apple products that people can’t give away because Apple goes out of its way to devalue those items when their latest product come out. I’m not sure why anyone would buy an Apple product that can be found for free a few years after release.
It is weird that I find so many lamps. I found a pallet of LED lights that had been taken out of a local sporting goods store. So far every box of Par lights that I have tested out of that pallet of boxes has worked. They retail for around $50 per lamp (bulb).
